Date: 18-06-2014
Timetable: 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Next Wednesday, 18th June 2014, at 18.00h the CITM (c/ de la Igualtat 33, Terrassa) will host a new edition of our cycle of open conferences Creative CITM. On this occasion, we have the pleasure to learn of the experience of Felix Balbas, a 3D animation professional and a specialist in VFX special effects for big blockbusters who has worked in extremely popular productions such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings or Avatar, among others.

The international standing of Felix Balbas: Around the World working with VFX

Felix Balbas started off studying Fine Arts. His first contact with the professional world was in advertising at Locomotion (Interactive Group in Milan). After almost three years, he moved to Munich Animation in Germany to work on a Warner Brothers traditional animation movie, The Fearless Four. One year later he moved to ILM (San Francisco, California) for four years, where he worked on Flubber, Small Soldiers or Jack Frost. However, his opportunity arrived in 1999, the year he moved to New Zealand to work as a Creature TD in the two first movies of The Lord of the Rings.

At the beginning of 2001 he returned to Europe (London, UK) to start working for Framestore, where he worked on Harry Potter (the production of which won a VES Award for the Hippogriff), X-Men 2, The Golden Compass, Children of Men, always as a Rigger/Rigging Supervisor. After seven years he returned to Weta Digital (New Zealand) for the large production Avatar.

In 2009 he returned to London, this time for Double Negative, where he worked mainly in John Carter, as a rigging supervisor.

From 2011 to 2012 he worked one more year in the advertising industry at MPC Commercials, until he finally set up his own company MINIMO VFX with Maurizio Giglioli in Barcelona, working, among others, on these 4 titles: The Machine, Monsters: Dark Continent, Pudsey the Dog: The Movie and The Nostalgist.

In 2014 he started as the director of b’Ars VFX fair in Barcelona.

If you would like a summary of his experience, don’t miss the showreel on Felix Balbas’ works.
