On the occasion of the International Day of Light, celebrated on May 16 to commemorate the first emission of laser light carried out in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman, the FOOT is organizing an Instagram photography contest open to the entire community.

The laser is a paradigmatic example of how a scientific discovery can lead to revolutionary tools with a major impact on society, particularly in fields such as communications, healthcare, and many other technological applications.

To celebrate this occasion, we invite you to take part in the contest with images related to light in all its forms: optical phenomena, night photography, artistic expression, among others.

How to participate

  • Post up to 3 images on Instagram.
  • The photographs must be related to the theme of light.
  • Posts published between April 1 and April 30 will be considered.
  • The winner will be announced on May 15.

The new call for Impuls UPC 2026 grants is now open, promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for Transfer, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

These grants provide financial support to entrepreneurial projects and emerging companies from the UPC community.

Two participation tracks

Impuls UPC – Entrepreneurial Talent 2026

Aimed at early-stage projects, without a formally established company, linked to any UPC entrepreneurship support initiative (such as the Emprèn UPC Programme, Santander X Explorer, project or business creation courses, Primer Programmes, among others).

  • Target group: undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students of the UPC (academic years 2024-25 and/or 2025-26)
  • Grant: up to €3,000 per project
  • Number of awards: 10 projects
Impuls UPC – Emerging Company 2026

Aimed at technology-based startups and spinoffs already established, in their first years of activity.

  • Target group: startups or spinoffs established between 2024 and 2026, promoted by students, alumni, PDI and/or PTGAS of the UPC.
  • Grant: up to €7,500 per company.
  • Number of awards: 8 companies.
The application period for both tracks will be open until May 31, 2026.

The National Digital Content Hub, together with the Television Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Audiovisual, the Málaga City Council, and the Junta de Andalucía, announce the II Edition of the IRIS Games Awards 2026, a leading competition in the video game sector in Spain.

The awards include a "Best Educational Center Game" category, aimed at projects developed by students in video game, animation, digital art, or related programs.

The registration period for the IRIS Games Awards will remain open until May 17.
